Many individuals throughout the court reporting industry remain confused on the subject of CART and what it really means.

Luckily for us, Remote Counsel's partner Kramm Court Reporting has published a blog article that answers all of the questions you might have on Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART).

CART is realtime speech-to-text that is produced by a CART captioner. These captioners convert this speech using a stenograph machine and other technologies.

What is the biggest difference between court reporters and CART captioners, you ask?

According to Kramm,

"Court reporters must write verbatim, they do not have to be 100% accurate because they have the opportunity to edit and correct their transcripts."

On the other hand, CART captioners

"Do not need to write 100% verbatim, but what we write must be highly accurate and accurately reflect what is being said, no matter how arcane the language, thick the accent, or foreign the name."
